The Science

Advantages of sugarBEAT®

CGM for everyone

During the past decade CGM has become the standard of care for persons with Type 1 and intensively managed Type 2 Diabetes. In 2019 a group of internationally recognized KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) developed a consensus on goals for Time-in-Range (TIR), which were presented at the ADA 2019 meeting and published in Diabetes Care (https://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/42/8/1593). TIR targets were defined for all major groups of People with Diabetes not just Type 1s.

TIR visualizes and delivers significantly more information on daily glucose variations than HbA1c or blood glucose test strips can. Further, TIR enables People with Diabetes to assess glucose level patterns, make treatment decisions and take actions empowering them to improve their diabetes, health and general well-being.

Until now the high daily cost of CGM and long sensor life have limited the use of CGM only to Type 1 and intensively managed Type 2 People with Diabetes. sugarBEAT® is designed as “CGM for everyone” with a single day non-invasive sensor and affordable pricing.

How it works

1

The rechargeable transmitter connects with the daily disposable Sensor, which is worn on the upper arm and held in place by a hypo-allergenic patch.

2

The daily disposable Sensor has a sensing chamber that measures the glucose molecules present in the interstitial fluid, which naturally sits just below the top layer of skin.

3

The transmitter measures the glucose levels in the sensing chamber every minute, then securely transmits this data every five minutes, via Bluetooth, to the sugarBEAT® smartphone App. Using a proprietary algorithm, the App then converts this data into glucose values.

4

Banner Message

Displays key information and instructions. Let’s you know if you’re in range and displays any alerts.

5

Glucose Level

This section displays the details of your most recent glucose sensor reading, transmitted every 5 minutes.

6

Current glucose level

Shows your latest glucose reading. The colour of the hexagon indicates whether you’re in range, trending high or trending low.

7

Trend arrow

Indicates whether glucose levels are rising or falling between readings.

8

Today

This section displays your average hourly glucose level throughout the day.

9

Glucose Trend Graph

Each reading is recorded on the graph. The graph shows your glucose trend line throughout the day, along with any activities, meals or medication you’ve logged in the App.

10

Lifestyle insights

This data will enable you to spot trends or patterns associated with your lifestyle and so help you to better manage your glucose levels and hence your diabetes.

11

This week

This section presents the Time in Range (%) plus the highest and lowest values for each day worn in last 7 days.

12

Time-in-range (TIR)

TIR is the percentage of time spent with glucose levels within a target range. Spending more TIR helps minimise both short and long-term health complications.

Understanding the data

1

Glucose trend graph

The graph displays the glucose trend line for the day. It’s updated every 5 minutes with your latest readings.

2

Trend line

This line helps you to spot trends or patterns during your sessions in relation to meals, activities and other lifestyle factors. Keeping an eye on these will help you understand and better manage your glucose levels, hopefully improving your health and condition in the long term.

3

Target range

The dotted horizontal lines show your target boundaries, so you can see quickly and easily determine the amount of Time-in-Range (%) and which values are straying out of range either higher or lower.

Advantages of sugarBEAT®

Comfortable and convenient

Unlike other CGMs, sugarBEAT® is non-invasive, meaning it’s completely painless. Simply peel and place the hypoallergenic adhesive sensor and place it on the arm – just like wearing a plaster. Apply it at the beginning of a day for up to 14hrs of continuous glucose data, delivered straight to your smart phone.

Informative and empowering

Unlike traditional blood glucose tests, sugarBEAT®® tells users, in real time, how lifestyle factors are impacting their glucose levels. This allows them to change their behaviour, make healthy choices and see results, putting users firmly in control. As it’s flexible, users are in control of how often and for how long they want to wear sugarBEAT®, unlike other CGMs that rely on consecutive wear times.

Safe and affordable

sugarBEAT® is a Class IIb CE marked Medical Device. It is clinically accurate with a MARD of 12.3% with 1 calibration/day. It has both absolute and predictive alerts. Insulin dosing decisions can be made with adjunctive use of a test strip blood glucose measurement. It’s safe for the planet and your pocket too, with minimal disposable parts, no regular electronic waste and contains a rechargeable battery.
